At the heart of the Christian understanding of humanity is the assertion in God’s word that human beings are created by God in his image, and that each one is unique and precious to him. The creation narrative in Genesis culminates in the creation of human beings: So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. Genesis 1:27 In the psalms, David writes: For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. Psalm 139: 13-16 We are, indeed, fearfully and wonderfully made and God knows and loves each one of us.
