The Head of a New Human Race
What if the problem with the world is not “out there,” but in us? And what if God’s answer to that problem began with the conception of a child called holy, the Son of God? In Jesus Christ, Scripture presents the head of a new human race - and with Him, the only hope of rescue from sin and death.
The child to be born will be called holy
The angel says that Jesus shall be called holy (vs. 35). To be holy means to be pure and set apart. The conception of Jesus Christ was utterly unique and perfect. He needed to be holy because he came not as part of Adam’s fallen race, but as the representative and head of a New Covenant.
Unlike every other human being, Jesus was not conceived through ordinary human generation. He was therefore free from Adam’s guilt and able to stand as the federal head of a new humanity. Where Adam failed, Jesus succeeded. He lived a morally perfect life, fulfilling every demand of God’s law. This perfection was essential, because only a righteous representative could keep the law on behalf of his people.
We know how unable we are to do this ourselves. Though we may try to improve, sin clings to us like a weight pulling us under. What we resolve to do, we fail to carry out. We are unrighteous. But not so Jesus. He obeyed fully, joyfully, and completely.
More than this, Jesus was sent as the holy one set apart to be a perfect sacrifice. Under God’s law, only a spotless offering could be accepted. Jesus lived without blemish, without stain, without a single sin across the whole canvas of his life. When He went to the cross, bearing God’s wrath, his sacrifice was accepted as sufficient. Though we are deeply sinful, he was perfectly righteous. The debt of all believers is paid, their sins forgiven, and they are counted righteous in God’s sight - because he was holy.
The Son of God
Jesus is truly the Son of God in the sense of being very God of very God, equal with the Father and the Spirit. But, Scripture also uses the title, ‘son of God’ to describe an office. Adam himself is called the son of God in Luke 3:38. He was described as this because he was created directly by God and appointed as the representative head of humanity. When Adam sinned, all who belonged to him fell with him.
Jesus Christ is also called the Son of God because He is appointed as the head of a new human race. The genealogy in Luke shows a break in the ordinary line of descent. Jesus is not born of a human father. He is created directly by God and appointed as the representative of a redeemed humanity.
If we are to be saved, we must be born again. To remain in Adam is to remain under sin and death. To belong to Christ is to belong to life. This rebirth is not physical but spiritual. Just as the Holy Spirit sanctified Mary’s corrupted humanity to bring forth a perfect Saviour, so he must work in our hearts.
By nature, our hearts are hard, cold, and dead to God. But when the Holy Spirit places the seed of spiritual life within us, those hearts soften and come alive. We begin to hear the word of Christ, see our sin, trust his righteousness, and believe in his sacrifice. Though we are not made perfect at once, we are changed and continue to be changed until one day we are fully conformed to Christ. He is the firstborn among many brother (Romans 8:29), and we are being made like him.
The Response of Mary
Mary’s response shows us the proper response to God’s work. She believed. To refuse belief is to doubt God’s power. Mary trusted the Holy One and submitted herself to His will, saying, “I am the servant of the Lord.”
True faith always leads to service. Mary’s obedience was costly. Her reputation was threatened, her future uncertain. Yet she counted serving God a greater privilege than preserving her own comfort.
So we are called not only to believe, but to follow in obedient faith. True belief produces a life of service, even when it costs us. May we respond as Mary did, trusting God, submitting to his will, and following Christ wherever He leads.
