The Treasure Hunt!

Bible passage: Proverbs 6:1-6

The Treasure Hunt!

The Treasure Hunt!

Proverbs 2:1-6

There are many kinds of treasure hunts. Children search for Easter eggs; stories are filled with maps that promise buried gold and silver. In real life, people search for mines – gold mines, silver mines – knowing that if they can find one and keep hold of it, they may become very rich.

In the passage we read in Proverbs, God tells us how to obtain a far greater treasure. It is more valuable than gold, more wonderful than silver, more beautiful than diamonds, and more glorious than all the rubies and sapphires in the world. This treasure is wisdom (Prov. 3:13–27; 16:16).

Wisdom has been helpfully defined as understanding through goodness applied to knowledge. In Proverbs, wisdom is shown as rejecting the wicked way and choosing the way of the righteous. It is knowing the truth, understanding its meaning, and living rightly in the light of that truth.

Wisdom is profoundly valuable.

  • It teaches us to truly know and fear God.

  • It enables us to walk in righteousness like our Saviour.

  • It helps us discern good from evil.

  • It gives us a true hope that cannot be shaken.

  • It enables us to apply Scripture to our souls in a lasting way.

“She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her” (Prov. 3:18). What a treasure indeed.

In Proverbs 2:1–8, God gives us a kind of treasure map. Whether we are mature believers or those who have never yet come to saving faith, this is the path we must follow.

The following three points are the points on that map to be followed if we are to find true wisdom.

1. Have attentive ears and inclining (willing) hearts

Imagine finding treasure, but your ship is so full of cargo that there is no room to take it aboard. Pride fills our hearts in the same way, leaving no room for God’s wisdom. Too often we think, I know best; I’m fine as I am. That attitude refuses wisdom.

Jesus often said, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” We need listening ears and willing hearts that are ready to receive God’s truth. Such hearts come only through the work of the Holy Spirit. He removes hearts of stone and gives hearts of flesh, making us receptive to God’s wisdom. How open are our ears? How willing are our hearts?

Above all, we must learn from the one who is wisdom incarnate: Jesus Christ. As we grow in knowing who he is, what he has done, and what he teaches, we grow in true wisdom.

2. Call out for it to the Lord in prayer

“Call out for insight; raise your voice for understanding” (Proverbs 2:2). There is urgency here. The book of James tells us to ask God for wisdom, and this applies to both unbelievers and believers.

  • The unbeliever must cry out to God for wisdom to know the truth and act upon it, pleading for mercy and repentance.

  • The believer must continue to cry out for wisdom in temptation, fear, and difficult decisions.

We are often foolish.

  • Sometimes we lack knowledge.

  • Sometimes we know the truth but fail to apply it.

  • Sometimes we simply love folly instead of wisdom.

We desperately need the wisdom of God, and we receive it through Jesus Christ, whose blood makes us fitting recipients of it.

3. Seek and search

We are told to seek wisdom like silver and search for it as hidden treasure. This requires diligence, perseverance, and eagerness. Do not give up.

  • Children and young people searching for assurance of faith – do not stop seeking.

  • Believers – do not settle for the little wisdom you already have.

Where do we search? We search in Jesus Christ. God speaks through him, and we hear him particularly in the Holy Scriptures and in the faithful preaching of the Word, God’s ordained primary means of grace. Search the Scriptures carefully. Listen to preaching attentively, believing that God uses it to dispense wisdom by his Spirit.

Do you want this treasure? If you do not have it, seek it earnestly. If you do have it, desire it more abundantly. May we abound in wisdom, putting off folly, choosing what is right, and glorifying God – to the praise of His glorious grace.
